Night Sky
Crafted September 2021-July 2023

This concept has been in my head for a few years now. It took a willing muse to bring it to life. The concept is an alchemy of balance, complexity, understanding, and flow, with a little mysticism mixed in.

Beginning with the fingerboard, the centerpiece. As stars seem randomly scattered thru the sky, there is order in the chaos. Their placement is anything but chance. As sailors would navigate the seas, guided by the known stars, so will the master of this instrument. Specific stars guide your intonation. Once that intimate knowledge is attained, the limits vanish, and this sky becomes your musical canvas. There are two constellations: Taurus, and Ursa Major. Centered between them is a blue paua crow -a spirit guide- and a full moon. The rest of the concept emulates the infinite possibilities of navigation thru the tonal universe, just waiting to be explored.

The finish is also something I’ve had in mind for some time. It’s a layering of royal blue, blue to violet color shift pearls, with translucent black over the top. In low light it looks black. Add some room lighting and the starry blue night sky becomes apparent. Under the spotlight is when the purple aurora comes to life.

Punchy, growly, well balanced in both tone and feel. At 9.0lbs it is comfortable for long sets, or long weeks. It has all the articulation and mid-forward character you'd expect from a fretless. The slimline neck feels comfortable, fast, and effortless. The electronic options add an extensive tonal palette to both passive and active operation.

The pickup is one of my personal fav's. It’s a Nordstrand Big Blademan, slightly underwound for a little greater sensitivity. But it still has the tonal girth and muscle to ensure your presence is felt, and known.

The toggle selects between parallel mid scoop hum-free operation, split coil, and series for more heft and a thicker, beefier mid boost. Plan on spending some time getting to know this instrument, and discovering the multiple personalities is possesses..

The aluminum/steel Transtone bridge adds punchiness, with the Hipshot quality that is known.

The combination of a Honduran mahogany neck and 35” scale make for warm deep lows with piano like crispness. If you’re thinking “35 is too big”, well, it’s really not. Here’s why: the difference in distance from the nut to the first fret -the largest gap- is 3/32”. At the 12, it’s 3/64”. Tiny, and well worth the increased low-end clarity. The little bit of extra space in the upper register keeps the feel uncluttered and easily accessible.

I built this instrument as I do every one, as if I’m building it for myself. In a sense I always am, because the joy I take in craftsmanship, details, functionality, practicality and aesthetics is a reward of its own merit. Either way, I wouldn't offer any creation for sale that I wouldn't long for myself.

I hope this beauty finds its way to it’s forever home. But it wouldn’t break my heart if it never left.

'34 Special
Crafted May-November 2023

The inspiration for this came from my youth, watching my older brother and his high school friends build street rods. For them, the primary objective was to go fast, usually in a straight line. With the limited budget of a teenager each would come up with secrets under the hood to get an edge. Second priority to that was looks. Typically a fresh coat of primer. If successful, it got the respect of piers, and nearly as importantly, the girls. No apology was offered for the purity of single minded purpose, all the while striving toward an imaginary concept of a cost-is-no-object street rod. A Jason Statham character on wheels. One that would be all business, with secret weapons that belie it's manners and understated elegance.

This whip is the musical embodiment of that concept. It's a P-bass. Plug it in, turn it up, and play it 'till the wheels come off. Don't be scared. The bones of it's tone are exactly what you'd expect of a P. Just...bolder, thanks to the Nordstrand p'up. The onboard passive tone upgrades offer a bit more range as well. The mid enhancement infuses more of that midrange vintage honk. The mid scoop modernizes it a bit while maintaining that analog vibe. With the the right setting of the user adjustable tone module in the cavity, it actually adds some distortion and tube-grit when cranked. This ride may have the looks of one built by a well-heeled teen from affluence, but it's no trailer queen. The dead flat finish, AAAA figured maple top, rare figured ebony board, black limba neck, and beautifully grained swamp ash body all equally serve form and function. And the motor, a Nordstrand Audio NP5 with alnicoV magnets will blacken your eyes, if you're not careful. With the home spun mods under the hood it becomes an Armani clad beast. Refined enough to get into the club on the A list, rough enough to brawl in the alley out back and still walk away with the girl.

Rat Rod
Crafted May-November 2023

Continuing along the hot-rod motif is this offering. It's namesake comes primarily from the finish, inspired  by the so called "Rat-rod". Like it's sibling, the '34 special, this one is a street brawler, but with more versatility and extended range. Let's start with yet another offering from Norstrand, their Big Splits. Absolutely amazing p'ups! Based around the jazz base tone, but in a split coil design that provides the punch, presence and heft to cut thru any mix like an MMA cage fighter while maintaining the subtlety and civility of a Duchess when asked. Split coil windings also means they are absolutely noiseless. The same passive mid-enhance control is under the hood as with all my builds. When combined, these options alone provide a plethora of passive tones suitable for any gig. Really. But wait, there's more! EMG's BQS system is stuffed into the mix as well, providing an absolutely limitless range of active, hi-fi sounding adjustability as well. My favorite feature of this system is the adjustable mid-frequency boost cut. (Click the link in the specs to learn more). The limba neck with rosewood board lends a nice smooth, wooly warmth to the the tonal profile. The one piece alder body supplements with deep lows, hi-end sizzle and aggressiveness. From soulful, melodic lines to driving slap/funk, hard rock/metal....the tonal option of this build really are limitless. The neck feels slim and effortless as it should be, since it's hand shaped.

Tiger P-J
Crafted May-November 2023

This offering is unique. But then again, everything offered here is. It's the ultimate cat's meow.

Starting with the finish, it's a mix of dead flat on the back and sides, with a trans-black over figured maple. Subtle and strong, begging the eye for a longer, closer look. It has a matching headstock. Because cats ooze cool, and there's nothing much cooler than a matching headstock on a guitar.

Sonically, this cat has all the adaptability you'd expect from a P-J set up, and more. This cat can take down big game anywhere. This cat prowls the low frequencies with the majesty of royalty. The 70's wind J p'up gives it all the growl and bite you could want. The NP5 split coil in front brings low end power, strength and presence to dominate any sonic environment. The same passive mid-enhance control is under the hood as with all my builds. An active EMG EXB is wired in parallel with the passive tone. This module is a one-stop-shop for tone contour. Simple and effective. Turning it up adds both bass and treble while cutting mids. 0 is flat, for pure passive tone. The closer to 10 you get, the bigger the scoop. When combined with the passive tone control, the mid adjusted become variable. These options alone provide a plethora of passive tones suitable for any gig.

The one piece maple neck keeps the sonic claws sharp. The one piece Honduran mahogany body brings clear, rich, full low end that can be soft as the tufts of fur between those big meaty paw pads, and completes the tonal profile. From soulful, melodic lines to driving slap/funk, hard rock/metal....the tonal option of this build really are limitless. The neck feels slim and effortless as it should be, since it's hand shaped.

Swamp Thing
Crafted May-November 2023

This offering is also unique. But then again, everything offered here is. Meet Swamp Thing. A beautiful beast for sure. Both the neck and body are hand hewn from single pieces of wood to deliver an impact on the tone that is earthy, pure, and genuine. Yet this beast has refinement within and a struggle to evolve that is real. Forceful yet capable of nuance, subtlety, and sophistication delivered with the force of the brute squad. Beautifully adorned in a multi layer finish called voodoo green. Light and shadow move thru it's cover like the legend of it's namesake. But it's sonic presence will always be there, never to be tamed or subdued.

The limba neck lends a smooth and snarky edge to the the tonal profile. The one piece alder body supplements with deep lows, hi-end sizzle and aggressiveness. From soulful, melodic lines to driving slap/funk, hard rock/metal....the tonal option of this build really are limitless. The neck feels slim and effortless as it should be, since it's hand shaped.
