Phoenix Rise 535

                       Origins

The Rise 535 was born in a morning of furious epiphany. It's a culmination of all the best features from all the basses I've built -both aesthetic and ergonomic- while simultaneously eliminating all the things that just don't work. The shape started out as a J, then contoured to shed weight, add spice, and accommodate easy, organic access to 24 frets at the heel. The neck shape is years in the making based on, you guessed it, what works and feels right. I'm actually quite proud it, and the feedback is confirmation of that. All versions are available as fretless. The shark fin contour on the headstock is an homage to Fender, and the first custom neck I ever built out of a Phil Kubicki blank.

Iterations of the Rise 535

GC

J style, canted front púp in split-coil P bass positioning. Designed as a passive oriented bass with 2 band pre for additional flexibility. Builders choice for this one is Nordstrand Big Splits & 2 band pre, mahogany body, maple neck, yellowheart board. Articulate, growly with deep low end, overtones that bloom.

Puncheur

Single púp in P bass position. Fairly versatile depending on choice of púp and pre, but essentially a pony that does one trick really, really well. Builders' choice is Turner Gordo or Nordy NP5, no pre, no vol, tone only w/3 way toggle for PBC passive tone modules. Limba neck, ebony board in an ash body. Steel bridge w/brass saddles.

Rouleur

Very versatile design with an HB in the MM sweet spot and 3 band pre. Builder's choice is underwound Nordy Blademan & 3b, alder body with mahogany neck/maple board, aluminum bridge. (J body is no longer available)

It's a P-J. An all purpose one-stop-shop. Kind of like a P with benefits. Builder's choice is Nordy NP5/NJ5 with a 3b, Maple neck, pau ferro board on limba body.

Passive J, 70's position. Individual vol and tone w/PBC passive tones modules, switchable between parallel and series for a beefier, mid forward tone. Builders choice would be Nordy NJ5s, 70's or Turner SJs, limba neck & body, pau ferro board, steel bridge.

The bass arrived just fine and I am BLOWN AWAY!! First of all, the pictures didn't do it justice at all compared to how it looks up close...STUNNING! I've never played a bass out there that I thought would come close to rival the playability of my MTD, but you knocked it out of the park, brother! I absolutely love the sound...the tones I'm getting are amazing...All in all an amazing build with a surprisingly amount of attention to detail. Glenn, Valparaiso, IL Sept, 2024

Honestly, I can't put this bass down! Been playing for 54 years, have a couple Sadowskys, Custom Shop Fenders...the tonal variations vary so much...very expressive instrument!

I'm going to give you a five star rating. That's not just lip service. Your description was accurate, and the price and features are definitely on point...The features and body finish are amazing!... The neck is really well done in terms of feel. Slick, fast, and thinner than my other five strings from front to back, with nicely finished frets and no jagged fret edges to bother me. The variety and overall aesthetics of the tone is great! OK, better than great. Amazing sounds that cut thru the mix and record superbly. Love the Nordstrand pickups and preamp...

Functional art Confirmed! This thing is a mean machine. I'm very impressed with your work. Right now I'm only playing with tone and volume maxed. Direct into the board sounds real nice...the recordings sound great even without effects.

Michael, just wanted to say what a great job you did with this thing! Great tone with the preamp and the neck plays fantastic! Thanks for a great deal on this baby. I can't wait to put it to good use!

Fantastic communication thru the build cycle. The neck plays like a dream. I'm still exploring all the great tones this is capable of!

John, Revere, MA December, 2019

Michael builds to a very high standard. His necks make for an awesomely playable bass. He goes the extra mile to make you happy. Let him build you one before everyone else finds out!

Richard, Naples, FL October, 2019

Hey Michael, love this on-of-a-kind bass!...It's a joy to play and look at...

Larry, Port Angeles, WA August, 2019

Michael...my new favorite bass is this build. I love everything about it. Nothing I would change. I've played everything from a cheap Dean to a Sadowsky. I've been playing exoptic basses for about a year...until I picked up your bass. I love the neck and frets. The preamp is awesome, and she looks so pretty too! If you'd build a P-bass like this, especially the neck...I'd be a serious candidate to buy it... Richard, Naples, FL June, 2019
